Used rail track or used rail is a kind of rail reused after removing from heavy busy lines. The used rail track does not refer to the material that is removed and used again after the rail reaches the limit. The used rail mentioned here forms a graded use system of rails based on technical and economic analysis so that heavy new rails are on the exhausted mainline. After being used for a certain period, it will be replaced, comprehensively renovated by the factory, and then laid on the next-level line for use. In this way, heavy rails in better condition are always used on the continuous trunk line, and laying the refurbished heavy rails on the secondary line strengthens the track structure of the secondary line and reduces maintenance costs.

Application of used rail track

Mines, forest and other sites need the used rails generally inside roadways for building temporary transportation lines, light locomotive lines. Also, gantry cranes and crane installations need used rails. They can save a lot of costs compared to using new rails. The effect can be said to be the same.


Grade of used rail track (Chinese Standard)

  • Class 1

The great surface condition with no or little wear can be reused without reconditioning.

  • Class 2

Slightly worse than Class 1, can be reused after comprehensive recondition (milling the railhead ).

  • Class 3

The surface condition is between Class 2 and Class 4, can be relayed on the secondary level line after regular recondition (no use of milling the railhead).

  • Class 4

The surface condition is close to minor injuries which can not be restored.
